Head on the stake

I'm not into the band (Kult of Azazel), but I'm into the picture. Besides a little blasphemy never harmed anyone.
Except of course the ones it is meant to harm.

Curses to y'all.

Playlist for the fiery days

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind the God Traditional doom metal from the Finnish masters with vocals by Sir Albert Witchfinder of Reverend Bizzare, The Puritan and fucked up black metalers Armanenschaft. Great record.

Oranssi Pazuzu - Muukalainen Puhuu
You have heard a lot of wannabe psychedelic, progressive black metal. Forget all of them. This one , again from Finland, embodies everything you expect to listen when you think of progressive or experimental or psychedelic black metal. Much more than just a tag.

Mortuus Infradaemoni - Imis Avernis
Raw black metal from Germany by skilled and experienced musicians. One of the best pure and raw bm records I've heard recently.

Miasma - Spirit Death
Lately I realy love American bands like Miasma and the ones that follow. Raw, atmospheric, dark, excellent.

Malkuth - Sefirah Gevurah
Malkuth fall to the category mentioned above. Their music is raw yet experimental. One of the few cases of a band with no background in black metal, with members coming from the avant garde/experimental scene, that seem to have a feeling for black metal.

L'acephale - Stahlhartes gehäuse
L'acephale divide opinions as far as I can say but I realy like their blend of black metal, folk and martial rythms.

Katharsis - Fourth Reich
One of my all time favorite bands who I follow blindly. This is their most focused and organised work, yet the chaos they create is ever present and prevalent. Katharsis are twisted geniouses, I humbly kneel before them.

Chaos Moon - Languor into Echoes, Beyond
A band in the same vein as Miasma, evoking darkness in similar ways, using prety much the same weapons. Recomended.

Impiety - Terroreign
The mighty Impiety strike as we would expect them to strike. Fierce death/black/thrash with exceptional quality. Vientos de holocausto.

Dead man

I wanted to write something about this awesome soundtrack for quite a while now but I was either lazy or forgot about it. Now that I remembered I am still lazy. So I won't say much other than whoever hasn't listened to it is a cunt. And I wouldn't like any cunt listening to music I like. And normaly I don't really like soundtracks. And Neil Young is god. And I'm not the one to usualy deify anyone.

1000 Curses.

Total fucking revelation

I never really paid any attention to 1349. They always seemed to me like a fairly average band, one of the tones coming out of Norway, playing the same tired (and tiring) things, recycling the same members that have been doing this thing in100 other bands before (or at the same time).
What was always a mystery for me is the friendship and support that Tom Gabriel offered to the guys. I was never an admirer of persons into the metal scene. Nevertheless Tom Gabriel was always a figure so special and different that couldn't be but the exception to the norm.
What the fuck this guy was seeing into 1349 I never knew.

Until now....
Now I see. To deny the magnificence of the new 1349 cd would be mere stupidity. Or just incapability to truly comprehend the dark and gloomy nature that black metal shall have.
But who cares about what the fools have to say?
Gabriels influence is present in all it's dark glory, even if he didn't have any direct involvement to the creation of the music. To be around such a figurehead is a blessing by itself.
This is arguably one the biggest surprises I had in all those years I am involved with music.
My highest recommentations.

Scattered thoughts

This blog started with no specific goals in mind. This blog started with no specific area of topics that should be covered.
There is still no goal in mind. The topics have shaped themselves as time passed. It seems that, as music is taking most of my free time, my thoughts about music (and especialy black metal) have taken most of the space here.

The blogsphere has strange effects to the bloggers. Normally the motive for someone to blog would be the impulse to write down his thoughts. If anybody else would be interested, all the more better.
Today the web is full of blogs filled with signs of megalomania. For example the writer apologises for the long absence of posts or there are constant references to the "blog's readership" etc. Everybody (or nobody?) feels important. Everyone thinks that has his own fans. Everybody has made his first and foremost concern the number of visitors he gets.
Get serious assholes. Noone misses you when you are not posting, noone is waiting for your opinion in order to form his own.

But what if I am mistaken? What if there are people that are radicaly influenced by the blogs? What if there are people that take all the information they need by sources that are of questionable origin and proficiency? What if there are people that have the medality of a fan towards someone they don't know and they can never know, but they just got unto him after a couple of clicks?
Then the world is going to hell. But then again do we need more signs to certify this?
I'm eagerly waiting.

Afterthought....How great it would be to realy be able to manage and use this source of (uncontroled) information and power...

Black Metal is dead

Grigori

For the past recent years, the constant overflowing of bands has made the element of surprise practicaly non existant. Gone are the days of the passionate tape trading, the precious discovery of the underground and the active involvement to the things that were being done in the late 80's and early 90's.

I'm going to be 38 next month and the events of the underground of 1988 to 1993 have marked my life for ever. I think a great deal of this journey to the past has to do with the post I read earlier on surrealdocuments.blogspot.com concerning the epistolography of Euronymous, a figure that marked black metal like no other has. I myself had the chance to exchange a couple of letters with him. Today I realy regret that due to my gradual loss of interest for black metal from 1998 or 1999 (until 2006 when I heard Celtic Frost's Monotheist) I have lost those letters along with most of the correspodence I had with other persons involved with the underground at the time. This post was enough for me to remind me the "pen & paper" days of the underground.

But before I roll to the ever dangerous cliffs of sterile nostalgia I should fast forward to the present. A present that could be summed in a word (as long as music is concerned). Dowloading...

Downloading. What an easy and practical tool to keep one in touch with the current happenings and evolution of every life's aspect(music included). Also what a perfect tool of disorientation and creation of passive trend followers, if used in a superficial way. News travel fast but I realy doubt that there are any individuals today that are better informed and in touch with the zeitgeist of black metal than the ones involved with the underground two decades ago. A lot of mp3 files on the hard drive, most of them never make it to a second listen ending up beeing worthless weight for the new and shining pc.

So no big surprise that it is not at all usual for a band to come out of nowhere and grab your interest for good. After a lot of time this has happened to me when a couple of months ago I listened to Grigori's Principivm Et Finis. A band coming from New Zealand, which for starters brings the important and much missed, at least for me, matter of black metal's grobalization.
I have commented before about the foolish bordering of black metal to certain geographical regions, that occured to the total loss of it's potential after mid 90's(see http://ophis666.blogspot.com/2009/02/about-black-metal.html).

More importantly Grigori moved me with the feeling they present their work. Trully dark, almost ritualistic and malevolent. There is nothing ground breaking about Grigori. But the ones blessed with the dark gift of crafting this kind of music find the given tools enough.
I am realy awful at describing music. Besides I think that music is to be experienced and felt and not to be talked about.

Principivm Et Finis is out on Satanic Propaganda Records and can't recomend it enough.

By the way, a quick reference...The Watchers (from Greek (ἐγρήγοροι)) or Grigori are a group of fallen angels told of in Biblical Apocrypha who mated with mortal women, giving rise to a race of hybrids known as the Nephilim, who are also mentioned in Genesis 6:4.
